The Aviator (Film Review)

I just saw The Aviator the other day and I give it a thumbs up! The film in many ways is Martin Scorsese version of Citizen Kane. The cinematography, acting, dialogue, are some of Martin's best.

I also liked the way the film doesn't dwell too much on Howard Hughes "eccentric" behavior but instead focuses on a very complicated and interesting man. Leonardo DiCaprio performance in this film is his best. I also liked Cate Blanchett who plays Katharine Hepburn. If your not familiar with Hepburn, you'd think that Blanchett is
a bit over the top with her portrayal. But in actuality, Hepburn in real life was over the top! One of those two should win an Oscar for their performance.

The odd thing about the movie was trying to figure out what Kate Beckinsale (who doesn't resemble Ava Gardner) was doing in the film. I mean besides the fact that guys like to look at Kate Beckinsale. Actually there was a lot of cameo performances by Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, and Gwen Stefani that really didn't make
sense. They just suddenly appear in a scene, peak your interest, and then just disappear. My suspicion is that Scorsese probably shot enough scenes for 2 or 3 movies and had difficulty editing it all.

Also, the inside joke of the film is when Hughes is directing Hell's Angels, it's really a parody of Scorsese when he directs a film. Who says Marty doesn't have a sense of humor.

It's also a bit long and slow at times, but overall I would recommend this film.
